From Hopelessness to Opportunity

When Gavin arrived at Covenant House Texas, he was carrying the weight of a childhood filled with trauma. At the time, he struggled to imagine a hopeful future for himself.

“I thought everything—my future—was hopeless,” Gavin shared.

Through the safety, stability, and comprehensive support available at Covenant House Texas, Gavin began to see that his past did not have to determine what came next.

Finding Support and a Place to Heal

Gavin’s journey has involved more than finding a safe place to stay. He has participated in mental health services and other programs designed to help young people heal, build confidence, and prepare for independence.

He has also found a sense of community among his peers and the Covenant House Texas staff members who have supported him along the way.

These relationships gave Gavin people he could turn to as he began setting new goals for his life. With encouragement and access to the right resources, he started moving from simply surviving toward building a future.

Preparing for Employment

One of Gavin’s most significant accomplishments has been securing a new job at Starbucks.

The opportunity began at a career fair hosted by Covenant House Texas. After connecting with an employer, Gavin received additional guidance from the Career Services team and his case managers, Ms. Cynthia and Mr. Cody.

They helped him prepare for his interview, understand what to expect, and walk into the meeting with confidence.

“I was able to interview prep with them and be extremely confident going in,” Gavin said.

That preparation paid off. Gavin landed the job, giving him an important source of income as well as an opportunity to strengthen his professional skills and continue working toward long-term stability.

His achievement demonstrates why employment support is such an essential part of Covenant House Texas’ wraparound services. A job can provide income, but career coaching, interview preparation, encouragement, and continued guidance help young people build lasting independence.

Experiencing Community and Celebration

While Gavin is proud of his employment progress, one of his favorite experiences at Covenant House Texas has been attending the organization’s gala.

The evening gave him an opportunity to celebrate his peers, recognize the sponsors and donors who support Covenant House Texas, dress up, spend time with friends, and watch Lauren Daigle perform.

For Gavin, the gala was more than a special event. It was a reminder that he belongs to a community that believes in him and wants to celebrate his progress.

“It was an extreme honor,” he shared.

Looking Toward the Future

Gavin’s story is still being written, but his outlook has already changed dramatically.

He came to Covenant House Texas believing his future was hopeless. Today, he is healing from past trauma, developing professional skills, maintaining employment, building relationships, and looking ahead with renewed expectation.

Gavin was recently elected President of the Youth Advisory Council where he represents the youth voice to staff and leads community development amongst his peers. In this role, Gavin serves as a mentor and advocate for the entire body of youth residing at Covenant House Texas.

“I look forward to anything else coming our way,” Gavin said.

His journey reflects the courage it takes to accept help, confront difficult experiences, pursue new opportunities, and begin again.

At Covenant House Texas, young people like Gavin receive more than a bed. They gain access to mental health care, case management, career development, community, encouragement, and other critical resources that help them move toward independence.

Gavin’s progress is proof of what can happen when a young person is surrounded by consistent support and given the opportunity to recognize their own potential.
