Gwenisha arrived at Covenant House Texas carrying fear about the unknown—and a clear sense that she needed to leave toxic family dynamics and a harmful relationship behind.

Choosing to walk away was not easy. For Gwenisha, it was an act of courage: the strength to step into uncertainty because staying where she was could no longer lead her toward the future she imagined.

That future has always been ambitious. Gwenisha wants to be successful in her careers, pursue modeling, write movies and build a spiritually focused business that helps women feel confident, heal and pursue their dreams.

But first, she needed a place where she could feel safe enough to begin again.

A Place Where She Could Be Herself

Gwenisha remembers feeling an immediate connection when she arrived at Covenant House Texas. Ms. Aida welcomed her and helped her feel at home. She also found something deeply important to her: the freedom to practice her personal beliefs and remain connected to the spirituality that guides her life.

“I feel like I can be myself and I am accepted,” she said.

That sense of acceptance gave Gwenisha room to breathe. Group therapy, the art room, Career Services, case management and other programming all became part of the support surrounding her. Over time, fear began to give way to calm.

“I have more peace,” she said. “I feel safe and ready to accomplish my goals.”

Turning Passion Into Progress

Gwenisha has already begun turning those goals into action. She completed an internship at Covenant House Texas, pursued multiple job opportunities and received an offer to work as a dishwasher at Truluck’s. She is saving money and planning for independent living.

She is also pursuing a passion that allows her confidence to shine: modeling. Gwenisha has entered several competitions and, at the time of her interview, was in first place in more than one of them.

The experience has reinforced a lesson she wants other young people to hear. Other people do not get to decide whether she succeeds.

“You have to keep trying, even if you fail,” she said. “If it is a passion for you, go for it and don’t give up. Believe in yourself.”

For Gwenisha, courage means strength. She needed that strength when she first came to Covenant House Texas, and she continues to draw on it as she works, saves, competes and plans for what comes next.

A Future Guided by Confidence, Not Fear

Gwenisha sees herself building a successful modeling career, writing films, growing her spiritual business and eventually living in Las Vegas. Her dreams are bold, and so is the advice she offers to anyone entering a difficult season: never allow fear to guide you. Trust yourself, stay on your path and keep going.

She credits Covenant House Texas with helping her “push through my career goals and feel confident in doing so.” She also wants the community to understand that young people from every walk of life can find acceptance here—and that young people who engage with the programs have a real opportunity to move forward.
